Tackling a wedding is no small task. Getting engaged is just the beginning of a long journey to the aisle, and there’s so much to do before you get there. While a lot of planning a wedding might seem overwhelming at times, there is one fun thing you get to look forward to before your big day; your engagement session.
An engagement session is a fun chance to get to know your photographer better, and see how they work with you as a couple. Your photographer will get to figure out all your best poses, instead of trying to get them right on your wedding day, and you get a lovely set of photos to send out with your save-the-dates. It’s a win-win situation.
One of the biggest questions we get before engagement sessions at Leah Barry Photography is, “What should I wear?” We’re glad you asked! What you wear for your engagement session is a big deal, and a great way for the two of you to express yourselves as a couple. Here are some basics to keep in mind when planning your outfits.
1. Don’t Try to Match
Coordinating too much with your fiance for your engagement photos will leave you looking overly matchy-matchy, and honestly a bit boring. Instead of picking out shirts in the exact same color to wear, coordinate outfits that compliment each other. Just think about colors that look nice next to each other, or have one person wear a neutral color. Variety will create more interesting pictures.
2. Say Yes to Patterns
There’s a common misconception that patterns don’t photograph well, and that’s simply not true! Plaids, polkadots, and even florals can all look beautiful in pictures, and keep looks fun and fresh.
3. Play With Accessories
Accessories are your friend when it comes to your engagement shoot. A scarf or pretty necklace can dress up a simple tank top or blouse, so don’t be afraid to break out some of your go-to statement pieces.
4. Show Off All Your Sides
At Leah Barry Photography, we usually shoot couples in 2-3 outfits at an engagement session. Take advantage of this! Vary your outfits from formal to casual. This is your chance to show off your personal style, so don’t limit yourself.
5. Find Some Fun Shoes
Want to make sure your outfit pops? Fun shoes will do the trick! You’d be surprised how often you’re going to catch sight of your feet in your engagement shots, so make sure you’re wearing shoes you love.
6. Iron Your Clothes
You know what definitely can not be edited out of your engagement shots? Wrinkly clothes! Make sure all your outfits are clean, and free of stains and wrinkles.
7. Clear Your Pockets
Guys, we can see your cellphone, keys, and wallet in your pockets. They look bulky, and don’t allow your pants to lay the way they should. Get them out of there!
8. Clean Your Ring!
Ladies, we know you’re going to want some beautiful shots of the ring, so make sure it’s sparkling clean!
9. Dress for Yourself
Above all else, make sure you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing. If you’re going to be pulling down your skirt or messing with a low cut top the entire time, maybe it’s not the right outfit for you. These shots should be fun, and you shouldn’t have to be worried about what you’re wearing the entire time. It’s also important that you’re wearing clothes that you truly love. If it doesn’t feel like something you’d normally wear, then don’t wear it! If you don’t feel fabulous in your clothing, that’s going to translate to your pictures.
And here’s a few of my favorite examples of what to wear for your engagement photos.
